Combatting the Insular Life

It’s way too easy and tempting to live an insular life as a Christ follower, as if we were living on an island entirely populated by other Christians. To combat that isolation, we scheduled a bunch of OUTreaches in 2008 to help us rub elbows with folks whose Sunday routine might not include worshipping at a church. So we:
- Roasted a pig and invited men to throw tomahawks at targets, don inflatable Sumo-wrestling outfits and compete in Man Games.
- Hid a thousand plastic eggs in a Nyack neighborhood for an Easter Egg Hunt and connected with some wonderful kids, teens and adults.
- Cooked up a bunch of dogs and burgers, popped popcorn and handed out glowing necklaces to 150 people who came to our riverfront property to watch the 4th of July Fireworks.
- Took prayer requests, painted kids’ faces and handed out 1,000 nifty pens with our website address at the Nyack Street Fair
- Handed out 32 gift boxes full of snacks and beverages to folks who had to work on Christmas Eve.
Tomorrow I’ll write about some of the other events we held to try to become a bridge between the love of Christ and the people of Nyack.
